THE 5/20 PROJECT Teaching No. 3 Teaching Youth

Teaching children or young people to become givers using biblical principles involves both instruction and example. Here are some strategies:

  1. Lead by Example: Children learn best by observing the actions of adults. Model generosity in your own life by regularly giving to others, whether through donations, acts of service, or sharing your time and resources with those in need.

  2. Use Stories and Parables: Utilize stories and parables from the Bible that illustrate the importance of giving and serving others. For example, the story of the Good Samaritan. (Luke 10:25-37) teaches compassion and helping those in need.

  3. Encourage Gratitude: Teach children to recognize and appreciate the blessings in their lives. Encourage them to express gratitude to God and to others for what they have received, fostering a spirit of thankfulness that can lead to generosity (Colossians 3:17, 1 Thessalonians 5:18).

  4. Involve Them in Giving: Involve children in acts of giving and service from a young age. This could include volunteering together as a family, participating in charity events, or donating items to those in need. Hands-on experiences can make the concept of giving tangible and meaningful.

  5. Teach Biblical Principles: Share specific biblical teachings on generosity, such as the concept of tithing (Malachi 3:10) or the importance of caring for the poor and vulnerable (Proverbs 19:17, James 1:27). Help children understand these principles in a way that is relevant to their lives.

  6.  Discuss Motives and Heart Attitudes: Talk with children about the importance of having the right motives and attitudes when giving. Emphasize the biblical principle that God loves a cheerful giver (2 Corinthians 9:7) and encourage them to give out of love and compassion rather than obligation or recognition.

  7. Encourage Sacrifice and Selflessness: Teach children that giving often involves sacrifice and selflessness. Help them understand that putting the needs of others before their own is a fundamental aspect of following Jesus' example (Philippians 2:3-4).

  8. Provide Opportunities for Reflection: Create opportunities for children to reflect on their own blessings and consider how they can use their resources to bless others. Encourage them to pray and ask God for guidance in their giving decisions (Proverbs 3:9-10).

By integrating these strategies into their upbringing and education, children can learn how to become givers who embody the values of generosity, compassion, and service, grounded in biblical principles.
